I finally saw Half-Blood Prince today!!1! I've never regretted running away from Potter fandom and never looking back after DH, but... man. My childhood. ;___; HP was a series that was amazing to grow up with, but has not been good for me to grow into. It feels so weird to... really not give a gigantic shit. What a totally, completely different experience.

The string of DS9 episodes I've been on lately (which are so, so cool and give me many thoughts and happinesses) made me pick up The Departure and re-read it today. Sweet sassy molassy, I still remember being ten years old and sitting on little carpet-covered steps in the bookstore and reading it and being blown away. I've read it so many times since then, but I still think it's my fave Animorphs book.
And that was the only goal of anything that went on in this entire book. An Animorph and a Yeerk (and an enslaved little girl) stuck in the woods, trying to explain themselves to one another and overcome huge, mountainous prejudices; differences in experiences; and interstellar politics. And they make progress that actually carries on to other books in the series and even contributes to the ultimate solution.
I am such a Cassie fangirl, omg. Only she could have done this. She was seriously the only Animorph who would have cared enough to try.
Endless, ceaseless love <3333333 *sigh*
< And your friends will kill me!> Aftran said. < Do you know what it's like to die of Kandrona starvation? Do you know what kind of agony it-->
< Then let's put an end to the killing!> I cried. < Your side, my side. The Animorphs will be here soon. They've seen me. There will be a battle. Some of those Controllers down there on the ground will die! Some of my friends may die! Karen may die! You may die! For what? For what?>
She laughed bitterly. < You think we can make peace between human and Yeerk and Andalite? Don't be stupid.>
< No, I don't think we can make peace between all humans and all Yeerks and all Andalites. But you and I can have peace. One Yeerk, one human.>

[Karen's] mother came and got her then. [She] disappeared, a little girl carrying a huge secret, her mind filled with things no little kid should know.
Kind of like me, I realized. Kind of like all the Animorphs.
Was I still an Animorph?
Yes.
It meant I would have to fight sometimes. But being an Animorph might also let me find other small victories for peace. Amid all the conflict and fear and rage, I could still look for the enemy who might become a friend.

I, uh, apparently spoke just a little too soon about DS9? Because the stretch I've been on has been, like, totally rad?
2x18 "Profit and Loss": Quark did not totally annoy me?!!?! And was actually really sweet??!
2x19 "Blood Oath": Jadzia continues to be my fave and I love seeing old TOS characters (though ye olde Evil Albino trope is tired and olde).
2x20-21 "The Maquis": In which I have no idea what is going on and once again bless the existence of Memory Alpha. But I kinda like it, and Gul Dukat and his freakishly long neck are sorta neat, and acknowledging darker aspects of the Federation is pretty cool?
2x22 "The Wire": Oh Garak, man of mystery. <3 He and Julian are such boyfrans. Cardassian novels and lunch dates, el oh el.
2x23 "Crossover": CREEEEEEEEPY.
2x24 "The Collaborator": *draws hearts around Kira and Bareil forever* I love to hate Vedek Winn sfm. She reminds me a lot of Umbridge, the simpering facade of niceness over a psychopath who would totally make you carve into your own flesh to 'teach you a lesson'. It's a villain type I totally dig.
Keep it up, DS9. I think I like you.

Which means that obviously my Trek immersion is not completed by TOS and the first six movies and STXI.
DS9 has been my next venture (purely because I have access to it), and I'm a bit more than half-way through season two. It is supposedly the "best" Trek (?), but so far it is awfully... slow? Occasionally fantastic (I loved the three-part S2 opener), but I often find myself going "So what?" after an ep. Needs moar lulz or urgency or something.
(My faves are Jadzia [!!!], Kira, and Sisko. And Garak when he's around. Quark and Odo really irritate me for some reason.)
In other news, everyone (read:
ontd_startrek) is already talking about what they want to see in STXII, and I am dismayed at how often I find myself filled with ( INCANDESCENT RAGE. )

In my ongoing journey into Trekdom, I watched Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country for the first time today. Really, really good film (SHAKESPEARE IN THE ORIGINAL KLINGON, ROFL), and would possibly overtake The Voyage Home (<33333333 x infinity DR. GILLIAAAAAAAAAN) as my fave if it weren't for a few things toward the end that totally pulled me out of the story.
First was Spock's unconsented mind-meld with Valeris. Shouldn't that shit be regulated, especially in situations like this? They seem so invasive and personal (she looked in pain, y'all), and Spock always uses them quite freely (see even STXI). I'm sure there's a disparity between how Vulcans would view them and how in-universe Humans (and others) would view them, and then again how I as a viewer see them... but it's never been addressed in any of the canon I've seen, so they just creep me out. (Along with Pon Farr, but that's a different bag of chips.)
The second iffy moment is in the next scene, when Kirk and Spock are talking about personal responsibility.
SPOCK: Captain, as we both know, I am not human.
KIRK: Spock, you wanna know something? Everybody's human.
SPOCK: I find that remark insulting.
Then Kirk just smirks and everything carries on. And just... no. And I get the point, seriously I do (everybody has faults and makes mistakes but tries hard, blah blah), but in-universe? That line means that Kirk has not learned nearly as much as he likes to think he has during this film, because equating those qualities with ~HUMANITY~ is b.s. It undermines quite a lot of what has just gone on, for me. =[
On the other hand... MARTIAAAAAAAAAAA. <3 <3 <3 <3

OMG, Iman, loling for forever. The people who show up in Trek never ceases to amaze me.
God, a woman who appreciates a good cigar. I cannot even. And Bones being exasperated when she climbs into Kirk's bed (WHAT IS IT WITH YOU, ANYWAY??)! And turning into an evil!Kirk double, what a great TOS call-back! Oh goodness did I love her.
